Take an Art Walk Through Downtown Lowell

Downtown Lowell's 3rd Annual Art Walk begins next week! Art Walk Lowell is a creative initiative to enliven storefronts during the summer of 2009 with displays from over 35 local artists, who will create colorful, full-window displays on Market, Middle, Merrimack, Bridge, Palmer and Central streets in downtown Lowell. Local residents and Folk Festival patrons can pick up a map of the displays at local restaurants and retailers. With the attached ballot, patrons can vote on their favorite artist display. At the end of the summer, votes will be tabulated and the winning artists will receive cash prizes. With each ballot you will automatically be entered into a raffle. Prizes include local artwork and a free dinner for two. Walk, Vote, Win!

Lowell Art Walk Kick-Off Party This Thursday!
Come join the Revolving Museum in downtown Lowell for the official ArtWalk Kick Off Party. Meet the artists who have created the pieces that people empty storefronts all through Lowell for third year in a row, making the City more beautiful and more fun. There will be a cash bar and lots to look at. The event is free and open to the public.

Free Fun For Kids and Concerts for Adults

The Lowell Summer Music Series announces its Free Fun for Kids Series, featuring ten free children's concerts with free art programs before the Series shows and free trolley rides after the shows each Wednesday and Thursday, July 8th through August 13th.

Revolving Museum Summer Workshops

Artbotics

Artbotics is a unique class that combines computer science and visual design skills. Students will learn computer coding and artistic design by constructing sculptures that move and react to sensor input using microprocessors. A celebration of the completed robotic sculptures will be held at the Revolving Museum for students, family members, and friends. There are two sessions, open to all students entering 7th and 8th grade this fall.

Having Fun With Your Camera, taught by Bob Stegmaier
The course begins with a one hour class room session to go over camera basics and composition; students will then spend several hours wondering the street of Lowell looking for scenic places. During the fun field trip, students will apply the technical basics learned during the first hour and reinforce the principles of composition by taking lots of photos. Students will be shown and encouraged to look at things from a different perspective. This is a hands-on course where any type of camera can be used to great good quality photographs. This course is $70/person, 18+ only.

Digital Photography Field Trip - One Day Workshop with Alyce O'Connell

Get out of the automatic mode and learn other settings for a creative approach to digital photography. Join professional photographer Alyce O'Connell on a trip around Lowell as she guides you through the ins and outs of both the technical and artistic aspects of digital photography. Learn to use your camera's manual setting and discover how to optimize its features. Explore the finer points of composition, exposure, white balance, and more. The cost is $84/person and is 18+ only.

Art Beat! 5 - Get Outside

This month everyone's favorite all ages hip hop event will be getting a little fancier. The same elements you've grown to love and expect will be there: The Deck Demons, a menagerie of MCs, our many local b-boys and b-girls and of course some live art. The twist? It's all moving outside.

The 119 Gallery has partnered with The Lower Highlands Neighborhood Group to put Artbeat! in Armory park. The event has been moved to a Saturday afternoon and evening to give artists more time to paint and you more time to check out all the talent. There will be food local vendors, so be sure to come hungry! Performers include 3SP, Blak Madeen, The Locksmiths, Madness 2012, and many more.

Sat., July 18, 2pm - 8pm. As always, the event is free and all ages. Armory Park, 50 Westford St, Lowell.

Lowell Unplugged: Acoustic Music Night
Come join the Revolving Museum for a night of music, art and community as we host our first "Lowell Unplugged: Acoustic Music Night," which will be featuring such acts as Lowell's own The Bella Birds and Clara Berry. So come out with your family and friends to support the local Lowell music scene. This event is FREE and all ages are welcome.

George Oommen: A Retrospective

George Oommen's work is largely abstract with a landscape flavor. Characterized by a strong horizon and colors from his homeland (rich Indian yellows, olive green, and turquoise blue), he plays with the viewer's focus by interrupting the line of vision with a veil of screens or paint drips. An exhibition of his work will be held in the Parker Gallery.

Lowell's Biggest Yard Sale

Come and sell your stuff for a good cause. Western Ave Studios will be hosting a city-wide yard sale to benefit the Lowell Human Society and the Studios. It will go on rain or shine, and you can participate yard or no yard! 10x10 spaces will be available to rent for $20. Leashed dogs are welcome, as are kids, grandparents, next-door neighbors, and just about everyone else. Registration is required by August 1, with your name, phone number, and what you intend to sell. World Cup Soccer Meets Fair Trade Festival

The 3rd Annual World Cup is a 16-team adult soccer tournament that will celebrate a shared passion for the game of soccer while raising money to help immigrants and refugees in Lowell. Event includes a kids penalty kick competition and a special New England Culture Fest Preview showcase featuring art exhibitors, live world music, dance, global disc jockey Selectress Iriela and more. Join the thousands who will descend upon Cawley Stadium to enjoy watching hundreds of players representing 16 countries from five continents. The New England Culture Fest Preview festivities take place on Sunday to celebrate the finals. $5 per day. Children under 12 go free!

"Through the Dunes" -- Tony Cerra

Tony Cerra's "Images Of Joppa Flats" is on exhibit at Newburyport's Bridge Gallery. Currently residing in Lowell, Tony has a wide range of talents, from professional jazz musician to pilot to his current occupation, a teacher of cabinetmaking at Nashoba Valley Technical High School in Westford. Preferring to work on-location, Cerra's landscape paintings vibrate with energy and strength, making music with texture, color and light. They are bravely stated and summon a spirit of excitement.

There will be a public reception Sat., July 18 from 6pm - 9pm. The exhibit runs July 1 - July 31, 11am-7pm daily. The Bridge Gallery, 1R Water Street, Newburyport, MA.

Impressionist Painting Lessons

A traditional Impressionist painter trained at the Cape School, Dennis' work focuses on the ever-changing light key and its effects on color in nature. His work is widely collected throughout the United States; he is currently offering painting lessons at the Whistler House Museum. They include a basic overview of the Cape School method, and then a hands-on experience in the great outdoors, creating vibrant paintings with Lucas's expert coaching. Students must be at least high school age and have some painting or drawing experience.

Weekly Workshops: once a week for a two hour period for five weeks. $200.00
Wed., July 15 to Aug. 12, 10am - 12pm.

Two-day Workshop: Two day session for three hours each day. $120.00

"Massachusetts Quilts: Our Common Wealth"

Since 1994, the Massachusetts Quilt Documentation Project has documented over 6,000 quilts originating or currently owned in the state. Some of the most interesting quilts will be on display at the New England Quilt Museum in "Massachusetts Quilts: Our Common Wealth". Curated by noted quilt historian and lecturer Vivien Lee Sayre, the exhibition will bring together quilts, historic photographs, and memorabilia to tell many compelling stories of the state's social history. On Fri., July 17, there will be a reception and book-signing from 5pm-7pm.

The Uptown Lowell Music & Art Festival

Finish off a day at the Lowell Folk Festival at the biggest show of the year on Lowell's finest day. The Great New England (Digital) Shootout

Get out of the studio for a weekend! Entrants in this contest will digitally shoot anything anywhere outdoors in New England. Shooting begins at noon August 5 and ends at noon August 8. Entrants will have one week to process images and post two of the best ones to the designated web site. Images are due by August 15 and voting will take place over one week period. The top twenty artists will have a gallery showing at the Giclée of New England Gallery, Palmer, MA. The artist voted Best in Show will receive a 30"x40" print on Photo Tex and a $100 dinner gift certificate at Mohegan Sun in CT.

Boston Biennial Art Show

Inaugural Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Art

The theme is biennials... and all the aspiration and greed, sublime insight and cheap self-aggrandizement, profundity and narcissism that biennials have come to represent. If you've ever attended a venerable Biennial and said to yourself "I can do better than that," this bi's for you! Come and show off what the Greater East Boston art community can do. This show is open to all artists over 18 years of age and all media. All works must be original and have been completed within the last five years. There is a $25 entry fee for up to two submissions, $10 for each additional entry. Sales are encouraged. A 20% commission will be deducted to benefit Atlantic Works Gallery.

"Feline, Canine, All Mine"

Beginning September 3

It's raining cats and dogs at this unique exhibition, opening at Rollstone Studios this fall. Area artists are invited to submit, in any media, 2- and 3-dimensional art or high quality craft that represents cats and/or dogs. "We have been debuting original exhibitions at the Studio for the past year, and ‘Feline, Canine, All Mine,' is our first fully-juried exhibition," explains Studio Director Anne Giancola. "Our visitors come from all over Worcester County and we thought a show highlighting household pets would appeal to all ages and provide an intriguing challenge to local artists." Rollstone Studios is a cooperative artist-run studio and gallery in downtown Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The storefront gallery features work by local artists and artisans, and is the home of the Fitchburg Cultural Alliance.

"Herding Cats: An Open Juried Exhibition"
Brush Art Gallery and Studios, Lowell
September 26 - October 24, 2009.


This exhibition is being held in collaboration with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition, an all volunteer, no-kill organization that advocates for homeless and feral cats. The Brush Art Gallery will be hosting a fundraiser in conjunction with the exhibition. All proceeds from the fundraiser and sale of artwork will be shared with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition. The exhibition, which will celebrate cats in general, will also give the public and area youth an opportunity to learn about cats as they photograph and draw them during a feline "meet and greet" at the gallery.

Call for Volunteers

The Revolving Museum is looking for volunteers to help out with The Lowell Folk Festival. Volunteers are needed on both Sat., July 25, and Sun., July 26, from 10:00am to 2:30pm, and 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Join us as we conduct art-making fun with face-painting, origami, maracas, and sidewalk chalk.
