Not even modern machinery could keep "The Tramp" down!

Charlie Chat: Chaplin once said, "A day without laughter is a day wasted" and "Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease of pain." Chaplin made sure that his audiences always had a good laugh AND came away with a poignant message as well. Come see "Modern Times" and learn more about the brilliance of Charlie Chaplin from our guest speaker, professor Todd Avery of UMass Lowell, at 3pm on Sat., April 10, at Pollard Memorial Library as part of the Lowell Film Festival!

Art exhibit -- Bill Giavis: "On the Road and Home Again"

Lowell resident Vassilios "Bill" Giavis exhibits a collection of personal paintings in the Members Room in the Parker Gallery at the Whistler House Museum of Art. This body of work consists of intimate views from the inside of his home and cityscapes from Lowell and New York.

The New York cityscapes in this exhibit are watercolor paintings from 1999 to 2000. This was a point in his life when he was visiting the city frequently. It includes some small businesses and store fronts. The cityscapes of Lowell are done in oil paint. These were painted over the last decade and include Middlesex Community College and the Revolving Museum. Scenes of the inside of his house "Interiors" were also painted in oil. These were painted during the time period from 2002 to 2008.

Exhibit runs April 1 to May 15
Reception: April 17, 2pm-4pm

"China Blue" screens at MCC

Don't miss this free screening of the award-winning documentary film. The event is co-sponsored by Middlesex Community College Cultural Connections and the UMass Lowell Department of Regional Economic and Social Development. A discussion with UMass Lowell Emerita Professor Jean Pyle and a reception will follow the screening.

About "China Blue:" Shot clandestinely at a blue-jeans factory in southern China where 17-year-old Jasmine and her friends work around the clock for pennies a day, 'China Blue' reveals what international retail companies don't want us to see: How the clothes we buy are actually made. There are striking parallels to Lowell in the days of its boarding houses and 'mill girls'.

Mon., April 12, 6:30-8:30pm, Middlesex Community College Federal Building, Assembly Room, 50 Kearney Square
