The Lowell Small Business Assistance Center Needs Your Help

Greetings from the Lowell Small Business Assistance Center!

I would like to introduce myself as the new Director of the Lowell Small Business Assistance Center. As you may be aware, Russell Smith retired in January after many dedicated and productive years here at the Center. I eagerly look forward to working with you, getting to know your business and building upon his superlative work.

As you know, the Center is able to provide its services because of federal, state and private funding. In order for us to continue to receive that funding, to continue to deliver our services to new or existing businesses, we need to demonstrate our impact on the communities we serve. Therefore, we have to document specific outcomes. It would be much appreciated if you could share the following information with the Center.

  1. Did you start a business?
    1. If yes, when did it start?
    2. Did you hire new employees? How many?
    3. If yes, do you have a DUNS #? A DUNS # is a unique nine-digit identification that is provided by Dun & Bradstreet free of charge to help government funded agencies collect data from the businesses they serve. If you have received services from the Center, the federal government considers your business as having received and/or done business with the government. (Please give me a call if you would like a deeper explanation about this). We use the DUNS # to show the federal government that we have helped you.
    4. Apply for a DUNS # by calling 1-866-705-5711 and indicate that you are a Federal grant applicant/prospective applicant (this alerts them that this is to document government funding data and they will not charge you.) They will ask you a few questions, and then assign you a number FREE OF CHARGE. This takes only a few minutes and they are available at that number from 8 AM to 6 PM. If you could send back that number to the Center, that would be very helpful in our ability to continue to provide services to the community.

I look forward to meeting with you in the future. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or suggestions. Your response to this email is very much appreciated.

Additionally, I would like to invite you to a focus group being hosted by Community Teamwork Inc.'s Board of Directors to discuss the Center's impact on the community and businesses. This information will help shape the direction of the Center in the coming years. It will be held May 11, 2011 at 2:30 pm in the Board Room on the 2nd Floor at CTI's new building located at 155 Merrimack St. in downtown Lowell. Please let me know if you are interested by emailing me at shargis@comteam.org or calling 978-322-8401.

Thank you,
Stacie Hargis
Director
