Summer Jobs for Young Adults

The Young Adult Summer Jobs Program application process closed on April 29, 2011. Due to reduction in funds, the 2011 program will include a lottery to choose which young adults will receive job experience for six weeks this summer. Eligibility workshops will take place beginning the week of May 2nd, and will determine whether young adult applicants are eligible for the job lottery. The lottery selection will take place on June 6, 2011 and will be overseen by the GLWIB Youth Council.

65Northeast Energy Sector Partnership

In conjunction with the North Shore and Merrimack Valley WIBs, Greater Lowell was awarded a grant focused on expanding the capacity of the local workforce in renewable energy and energy efficiency. With funding made available through the U.S. Department of Labor and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Energy Sector Partnership provides training opportunities for unemployed residents and assists individual companies in training their existing workforce.

During the past several months the GLWIB and Career Center of Lowell have been meeting with local companies on training opportunities available through the grant. 65 incumbent workers from local companies will be trained through the grant. Training options include: HVAC installation and maintenance, facilities maintenance, weatherization, and renewable installation, including photovoltaic and solar thermal installation skills.

In addition to working with employers, the grant provides training to unemployed residents who may be interested in areas related to energy efficiency. For general information on the grant, please contact Gail Brown, GLWIB Senior Program Manager at 978-805-4736. Unemployed individuals who are interested in training should contact the Career Center of Lowell for further details.
