Later on at the Brush Art Gallery you will have the chance to see wildlife, such as an American kestrel and a spotted turtle, "up close and personal" and learn about the challenges they face when it comes to survival in the wild. All ages welcome.

Lowell General Hospital's One-Day Exhibit of Cultural Artwork

The Diversity Counsel of Lowell General Hospital is planning an exhibit of cultural artwork for its employees and others who may be visiting the hospital on that day. Our hope is to have many, ethnic and diverse artists showcase their work in the Clark Auditorium on Feb. 23 from 12- 4pm. As a thank you, we are hosting a reception for the artists from 4-5pm.

LGH is the largest employer in the city of Lowell and is represented by many, ethnic groups. As part of our Diversity Counsel's mission, we want to celebrate this diversity in the workplace by offering this exhibit. It is also a wonderful way for the local artist community to connect with LGH.

We would like for you to consider being part of this event. You will have the opportunity to sell your artwork and leave contact information. If you would like to participate, please reply with an e-mail to this address: jsouza@LowellGeneral.org.

"The Invention of Lying" Community Film Screening

The City of Lowell was the center of attention in 2008 when the cast and crew of the Ricky Gervais romantic comedy "The Invention of Lying" came and filmed right here in the Mill City. Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, and Ricky himself were all seen at various hot spots in downtown!

Were YOU cast as an extra in the film or do you know someone who was? If so, come to The Old Court for this very special film screening -- see Lowell in all its glory and look for your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers who made it to the silver screen! This event is open to the public -- everyone is welcome! Presented by The Old Court Irish Pub and The Lowell Film Collaborative. Refresh your memory of the film and view the offical trailer!

Thurs., Feb. 18, 7pm, The Old Court Irish Restaurant and Pub, 29 Central St., Lowell. Admission: $5 at the door

Spring 2010 Urban Village Arts Series

UVAS (Urban Village Arts Series) Spring 2010, is proud to feature Bob Martin, the Lowell folk legend, and award winning Boston-based poet Jill McDonough as the first two artists in our 3-show series this year.

Bob Martin was born in Lowell and is an American folk singer/songwriter influenced by the Cambridge folk scene in the 60s. Emerging from the same New England city as Jack Kerouac, Martin, he made his first album Midwest Farm Disaster for RCA Records in Nashville, working with musician Kenneth Buttrey, a key player on Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album. In 1982, he recorded his second album, Last Chance Rider which was recognized as one of the top three folk albums in the country by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. The River Turns the Wheel is Martin's most recent album.

Jill McDonough has been teaching college English courses in Massachusetts prisons for Boston University's Prison Education Program since 1999. Her poems appear in The Threepenny Review, Poetry, The New Republic, and Slate. Habeas Corpus, her first book of poems, is fifty sonnets about executions in American history from 1608 to 2005. Her awards include a Pushcart Prize and fellowships from the NEA, the Fine Arts Work Center, Stanford's Stegner Program, and the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers. She recently was awarded the Witter Bynner Fellowship, which makes her the second UVAS artist to receive the prestigious award along with poet Major Jackson.
