MADE IN LOWELL
Invitation to the Made in Lowell eventOctober 16, 2009 the City of Lowell will hold its second annual "Made in Lowell" event. This year's event will showcase the creative economy sector and represent industries that focus on creating unique property, content or design such as intellectual property products, business-to-business creative services, art and culture, and economic activities focused on designing, making and selling objects or works of art such as jewelry, haute couture, books of poetry and other creative writing, and fine art. The event will be attended by elected officials, the business community, media outlets, and the general public who are interested in learning more about the companies who contribute to Lowell's economic prosperity. It is also a great opportunity to network with other business leaders in attendance.

PUBLIC MATTERS: EMPOWERING LOWELL'S LEADERS
Public Matters: Empowering Lowell's Leaders is an intensive six month experiential learning program in civic engagement initiated by the Paul E. Tsongas Center, an educational and civic partnership of Lowell National Historical Park, The Lowell Plan, Inc., Middlesex Community College and UMass Lowell.  The program's mission is to foster and enhance the knowledge and skills of emerging leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts and selected individuals participate in a rigorous and challenging program where members learn how to contribute more effectively to a diverse and mutually supportive community. While participants reflect diverse backgrounds, they share a common goal - to ensure that the Lowell of tomorrow will be served by inspired stewards of the city's history, natural resources, social and cultural capital, and economic and government institutions. The program examines, understands, and appreciates the City's industrial past, the current cultural revitalization, and historic preservation efforts. The program also acknowledges and practices the importance of leadership skills through a variety of methods and tools.

Public Matters is a course that includes lectures, video presentations, simulation, cooperative learning, class discussion, observation and analysis of Lowell-based case studies, interviews of community leaders, and field trips. It is open to individuals who either live or work and have been identified as leaders in Lowell. It meets every second and fourth Wednesday from January 6, 2010 to June 16, 2010. Two extended sessions will be held on Saturday, the dates have yet to be determined. Individuals who wish to participate in this program may apply directly or be nominated. Nominations are due Friday, October 23rd and applications are due Friday, November 13th. Both forms are available online at www.nps.gov/lowe.
