Kerouac Memorial Walk & Celebratory Session: TONIGHT

Celebrate Lowell's native son, Jack.
Celebrate Lowell's native son, Jack.

Join us tonight from 6-10pm as we commemorate the 40th anniversary of Jack Kerouac's death and the 50th anniversary of Doctor Sax --"Lowell Celebrates Kerouac" invites its members and the public to join in a Jack Kerouac Memorial Walk tonight, October 21, on the 40th anniversary of his death.

The event will start on the steps of the Lydon Library, UMassLowell North Campus, 84 University Ave., where walkers will gather from 6 to 6:30pm. They will view the Jack's Bridge art exhibit inside the library before leaving on the walk. The walk will include stops with readings at Kerouac landmarks from approximately 6:30 to 8pm:

Stop One: triple-decker tenement apartment one block north on University Avenue, known in Kerouac's youth as Moody Street. It is a major site in his Maggie Cassidy novel.
Stop Two: cross the dramatic rapids of the Merrimack River below via the old Moody Street Bridge, now the Textile Memorial Bridge, where as a boy, Kerouac witnessed the death of the "Watermelon Man" as movingly written in Doctor Sax
Stop Three: pass St. Joseph School where Kerouac attended French elementary school and stop at St. Jean Baptiste Church, the site of his funeral.
Stop Four: The last stop will be on the steps of the Pollard Memorial Library, where Kerouac played hooky from school and gained inspiration from the great books of literature.

Finish the evening from 8-10pm with a toast to Jack at the Old Worthen Tavern and enjoy a celebratory session with music, poems, and Kerouac readings in his spirit. The Worthen was one of Jack's favorite bars in Lowell and is the oldest, dating back to the 19th century. Musicians, poets, and readers are invited to contribute at the Worthen session.

Lincoln-Douglas Debates Explored in "The Rivalry"
UMass Lowell presents FREE performances of the acclaimed Lincoln-Douglas debates play The Rivalry by Norman Corwin

American history is a pageant of significant events that shaped our country-some of which mean as much to us today as they did in their own time. The 1858 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas represent a dramatic and ongoing dialogue about the American experience. UMass Lowell is proud to be presenting this critically acclaimed play by Norman Corwin based on these historic moments, as the first major cultural event at the new UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center in downtown Lowell.

Kevin Cullen of the Boston Globe called The Rivalry an important piece of history, if only because it reminds us that as much as Lincoln and Douglas were rivals, they were Americans." Corwin "turns history into compelling theater," wrote The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal described the play as "powerful.

Performances of The Rivalry are scheduled for Thur., Oct. 29 at 10:30am and 7pm at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street.

Admission is free, but reservations are suggested. To reserve seats, contact Barbara_Nolan@uml.edu or call the UMass Lowell Center for Arts & Ideas at 978-934-4450
