Calling All Paid-Up A.L.L. Member Artists!

Come and make your city more beautiful by being a part of Lowell's third annual Art Walk. ALL, COOL, GLCC, GMVCVB, and the City are working jointly to showcase the artist talent in our city, by creating a canvas of 36 vacant downtown windows for you to fill. Once the windows are finished, ballots will be available to the general public who will decide a winner by popular vote. There will also be a vote by a jury, with a separate prize; both will be announced in September. Each winner will receive a cash prize of $500.

Jul. 15 - Aug. 15.

Small Person, GIANT Presence

You Are What You Eat - Merrimack Murals Dedication
A yoga pose morphing into a pomegranate. A dancer spinning into a banana. A strawberry nourishes a wrestler. These are just some of the vivid images painted by Lowell teenagers that will grace a 100-foot long fence on Merrimack Street in downtown Lowell over the next six months. These talented young artists have spent the last several months exploring and painting various healthy lifestyles; come and meet them at a free opening celebration.

Movable Mosaics
As part of "Green: More Than a Color," Revolving Museum youth have been working with to create cool, movable, mosaic murals depicting fruits and vegetables. This special collaborative event among Lowell's art galleries and eco-friendly organizations will provide the public with educational exhibitions and demonstrations. Taking place in and around the beautiful Market Mills Courtyard in downtown Lowell, four art galleries will be opening exhibitions with environmental themes; please see the "Green: More Than a Color" listing in this week's E-Blast for more information on the larger project. The students will be unveiling their work in the courtyard this weekend; everyone is invited to attend.

Performers Wanted for Lowell Arts Festival

Want to be a part of Lowell's thriving arts scene and local economy? Working on a performance to premiere in the Fall? COOL wants to talk to you! We have an excellent dance and music performance opportunity coming up and would like for your talented group to be involved.

Upcoming Event: From Sept. 25-27, downtown Lowell will host our first ever Arts Festival, a new component of Lowell Open Studios.

We are looking for:
• Talented dancers and musicians to perform from noon to 5pm on Sat., Sept. 25 and Sun., Sept 26
• Performances of 5-10 minutes for dancers, 15-20 minutes for musicians

Cafe Aiello Showcases Local Talent!

"There's a lot to like... A Local's Guide to the Melting Pot" is a cross disciplinary artist's showcase. This first-ever Aiello event will feature spoken word, dance, and music and will explore the idea of Lowell as a melting pot by reflecting on the city's history as well as current efforts to create a stronger sense of community. Each performer was asked, "What do I bring to the melting pot?" Their answers are as varied as their mediums. With so many perspectives, the showcase becomes an artistic re-imaging of one of Massachusetts' most historic areas.

This is the first installment in a series of artistic performances that will investigate the ever changing landscape of Lowell.

Save the date! The Lowell Summer Music Series is coming up soon. This non-profit program is committed to bringing great music to Lowell - artists such as Los Lobos (who will be kicking off the Series), Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul, and Gaelic Storm will be performing in the fantastic outdoor venue at Boarding House Park.

Lowell Latin American Festival

Come experience the wealth of Latin American culture in the City of Lowell. There will performers playing merengue from the Dominican Republic, salsa from Puerto Rico, Bachata, Latin Pop, R & B, Raggaeton and Ballads. Featured also are cultural and Hip Hop dancers of all ages. Informational booths, children's entertainment and a dominoes tournament add an extra bit of spice.

Calling All Walkers

Whole Armour International Church and Touch Missions will be having a Walk-a-Thon to raise money and help improve the lives of children in Africa. Please join us at the Walk for Orphans. The walk is approximately 3 miles and will begin at the Sampas Pavilion, continue over the Hunts Falls Bridge to Middlesex St., cross over the Rourke Bridge and then head back to the Pavilion

Green: More Than a Color

Resident artists of the Brush Gallery showcase their works at this unique exhibition where all the artwork... is green! All the pieces are created with natural or recycled materials, are literally green, or showcase projects that are environmentally friendly. Featured artists include Gay Tracy, Will Winslow, Donna Murray, and Chrissy Hungate. This event runs from Wed., June 24 - Fri., Jul 31.

Also, join the Brush Gallery and other studios, plus various environmentally-minded organizations in Lowell, for the opening party for Green: More Than a Color on Sat., June 27, 2pm-4pm.

There will also be a preview party on Thurs., June 25, 7pm-10pm. Admission is $10.

"Pajama Jam!" with Bernadette Baird

Put on your jammies and join Bernadette Baird from Bright Day Music for a comfy and cozy musical experience at the library. Children and their grownups will learn new songs and move to the rhythms. This program is intended for children age three and younger. Space is limited, registration is required. To register, please call or stop by the Youth Reference Desk beginning June 8. "Pajama Jam!" has been funded by the Family Foundations Network. "Massachusetts Quilts: Our Common Wealth"

Since 1994, the Massachusetts Quilt Documentation Project has documented over 6,000 quilts originating or currently owned in the state. Some of the most interesting quilts will be on display at the New England Quilt Museum in "Massachusetts Quilts: Our Common Wealth". Curated by noted quilt historian and lecturer Vivien Lee Sayre, the exhibition will bring together quilts, historic photographs, and memorabilia to tell many compelling stories of the state's social history. On Fri., July 17, there will be a reception and book-signing from 5pm-7pm.

The Wizard of Oz

Students of Indian Hill Music School's Summer Musical Theater program will present "The Wizard of Oz," the all-time classic based on Frank L. Baum's beloved series. This performance will be fully staged, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children. The four shows are as follows:

Summer Music Programs

The 3rd Annual World Cup is a 16-team adult soccer tournament that will celebrate a shared passion for the game of soccer while raising money to help immigrants and refugees in Lowell. Teams: Ireland, USA, Portugal, Brazil, Cambodia, Germany, Vietnam, and England. Event includes a kids penalty competition and music, food, and arts and crafts from around the world. "Alter-A-Tions Exhibition"
Experimental Art Gallery & Studio
July 3 - August 2, 2009

The Experimental Art Gallery & Studio is seeking entries for their second group show of 2009 on Salem's Artists' Row. This exhibition explores themes of alteration - what do you alter to suit your needs? Do you have an alter-ago? Does your work explore transformation? Entries are open to all artists over 18 years of age. All media is welcome, including: 2-D, 3-D, sculptural works, photography, mixed media, crafts and experimental works. All work must be original and have been completed within the last five years. Entries must be submitted via mail. Email entries will not be accepted. Provide one image for each piece submitted. Two images will be accepted for three-dimensional works. There is a $6 entry fee for each work submitted.

Deadline for submissions: June 26.

Temporary Space Available

Anyone who has an artist's studio in Lowell may open his/her studio to the public provided he/she has registered with www.lowellopenstudios.org. Both the Arts League of Lowell and the Brush Art Gallery & Studios are offering temporary space to their members so that they may set up and sell artwork during Lowell Open Studios. The Brush is not charging for sales space, but you MUST register with the Lowell Open Studios organization. Lowell Open Studios is charging a $45 registration fee. For this your name and studio address will be listed in a special Artscope advertisement, a map, and your information and a sample picture of your artwork will be listed on www.lowellopenstudios.org. "Herding Cats: An Open Juried Exhibition"
Brush Art Gallery and Studios, Lowell
September 26 - October 24, 2009.

This exhibition is being held in collaboration with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition, an all volunteer, no-kill organization that advocates for homeless and feral cats. The Brush Art Gallery will be hosting a fundraiser in conjunction with the exhibition. All proceeds from the fundraiser and sale of artwork will be shared with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition. The exhibition, which will celebrate cats in general, will also give the public and area youth an opportunity to learn about cats as they photograph and draw them during a feline "meet and greet" at the gallery

The annual Salem Jazz and Soul Festival is seeking vendors for this year's event. This is the Festival's third year, and we'd like you to help make the 2009 season successful. Along with more conventional vendors, we are also offering free information-only booth space for qualified non-profit organizations. Forms must be in for consideration no later than Jul. 10, 2009.
