Lowell National Historical Park, one of the Service's 391 units, joins in with an exciting FREE outdoor film event at Lowell's Boarding House Park.
The program will bring together three film components: 1. "Untold Stories," mini-documentaries of national park sites created in conjunction with the upcoming Ken Burns series, "National Parks: America's Best Idea;" 2. Film trailers from the work of the "Lowell's Young Producers" project; and 3. A review of "Past, Present, and Future," Lowell National Historical Park's 30th anniversary video.
This city-wide event is also presented in recogniton of the PBS premier broadcast of Ken Burns' "National Parks: America's Best Idea" on September 27. The workshop will focus on using these paints in plein air-painting the cityscape of Lowell, and on the essential nature of the medium and its advantages. The class fee is $70, which includes the paints and some paper. Arthur W. Ketchen has been using casein since he was 13 years old. Throughout art school and in the years since, he has found it to be an excellent means of expression for many works. Ketchen is the designer of the National Parks monument in front of St. Patrick's On the Acre in Lowell. A noted instructor in Celtic Design, Drawing, Color and Calligraphy his work can be found in many private and corporate collections. The deadline to sign-up is August 22 and a minimum of 10 students is required. After 15 successful years in the music business, Jim's career continues to take on new directions and grow. Award-winning metal sculptor Dale Rogers launched this traveling exhibit of his unique 8-foot high by 10-foot long American Dog sculptures. Featuring quilts made from menswear, this remarkable exhibition brings together over 40 intriguing graphic works made from simple utilitarian fabrics long overlooked in the study of antique quilts. The guest curator for the exhibit is noted antiques dealer/expert and author Laura Fisher of Fisher Heritage in New York City. These quilts are compelling and often whimsical. Visually stunning and strikingly modern, these antique textiles make distinct graphic statements out of the most everyday materials. What Followed Me Home: Collecting Antique Quilts, Fabrics, and Tools, is a special exhibit of quilts from the personal collection of respected quilt historian Stephanie Hatch, showcasing a variety of styles and patterns, with fabrics including resist, block, copperplate, and roller prints. The exhibit dates have been extended through Oct. 4. Threads: The Weaving of Stories, an exhibit curated by the Revolving Museum, is the first exhibition to grace the Stevens Gallery. The objective is to hold an open call for donated, original works of art on paper which are to be displayed in local shops and restaurants for a period of two weeks in this coming September. At the culmination of the exhibit the works will be rolled into brown paper and distributed at random by a team of cyclist to persons on the streets of Northampton, MA. The Paper Girl Project is rapidly gaining momentum and is taking place in other major cities and on an international level. As a result, the project will be simultaneously tying itself into an international arts community movement while soliciting an unsuspecting bond within the immediate Northampton community. The open call for The Paper Girl Northampton Project requests original works of art on paper. Works are not to exceed 30 x 30. Are you a filmmaker and a fan of felines? Use your film skills to support the Billerica Cat Care Coalition and document the good work they do in a 15-20 minute film short. Filmmakers will visit the BCCC and film volunteer work in the field, including their "catch and release" program in which feral cats are captured, spayed/neutered, and released back to their colonies. The final film short will be premiered on Friday, October 2 as part of The Brush Art Gallery's "Herding Cats" exhibit and fundraiser to benefit homeless and feral cats.
