The Southeast Asian Water Festival welcomes volunteers to help out with all facets of the Festival. Whether you spend a few hours asking for donations or spend an afternoon helping out the Stage Manager, your time would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers receive a t-shirt and get to sample Asian foods for free. Positions include: Bucket Brigade, Stage Assistant, Information Booth, Recycling, Set-up and Take Down, LTC Volunteers, and Boat Volunteers. The course begins with a one hour class room session to go over camera basics and composition; students will then spend several hours wondering the street of Lowell looking for scenic places. During the fun field trip, students will apply the technical basics learned during the first hour and reinforce the principles of composition by taking lots of photos. Students will be shown and encouraged to look at things from a different perspective. This is a hands-on course where any type of camera can be used to great good quality photographs. This course is $70/person, 18+ only.

| | Celebrate the National Park Service's 93rd anniversary on Tuesday, August 25 with "National Parks Day!" Lowell National Historical Park, one of the Service's 391 units, joins in with an evening film event outside at Lowell's Boarding House Park. The program will bring together three film components: 1. "Untold Stories," mini-documentaries of national park sites created in conjunction with the upcoming Ken Burns series, "National Parks: America's Best Idea;" 2. Film trailers from the work of the "Lowell's Young Producers" project; and 3. A review of "Past, Present, and Future," Lowell National Historical Park's 30th anniversary video.
This city-wide event is also presented in recogniton of the PBS premier broadcast of Ken Burns' "National Parks: America's Best Idea" on September 27. | | Lowell Telecommunications Corporation (LTC) and the Lowell Film Collaborative continue their "Cinema at Studio A" Summer Independent Film Series with Medicine for Melancholy, a love story told through the eyes of two African-American twenty-somethings in San Francisco dealing with issues of class, identity, and the evolving conundrum of being a minority in a rapidly gentrifying city: San Francisco has the smallest proportional black population of any other major American city. What Followed Me Home: Collecting Antique Quilts, Fabrics, and Tools, is a special exhibit of quilts from the personal collection of respected quilt historian Stephanie Hatch, showcasing a variety of styles and patterns, with fabrics including resist, block, copperplate, and roller prints. The exhibit dates have been extended through Oct. 4. Threads: The Weaving of Stories, an exhibit curated by the Revolving Museum, is the first exhibition to grace the Stevens Gallery. Seven artists, including former Revolving Museum Artistic Director Jerry Beck, bring to ATHM a provocative exhibit fusing the history of traditional textiles with contemporary issues. The exhibit dates have been extended through Oct. 25.

The objective is to hold an open call for donated, original works of art on paper which are to be displayed in local shops and restaurants for a period of two weeks in this coming September. At the culmination of the exhibit the works will be rolled into brown paper and distributed at random by a team of cyclist to persons on the streets of Northampton, MA. The Paper Girl Project is rapidly gaining momentum and is taking place in other major cities and on an international level. Are you a filmmaker and a fan of felines? Use your film skills to support the Billerica Cat Care Coalition and document the good work they do in a 15-20 minute film short. Filmmakers will visit the BCCC and film volunteer work in the field, including their "catch and release" program in which feral cats are captured, spayed/neutered, and released back to their colonies. The final film short will be premiered on Friday, October 2 as part of The Brush Art Gallery's "Herding Cats" exhibit and fundraiser to benefit homeless and feral cats.

This exhibition is being held in collaboration with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition, an all volunteer, no-kill organization that advocates for homeless and feral cats. The Brush Art Gallery will be hosting a fundraiser in conjunction with the exhibition. All proceeds from the fundraiser and sale of artwork will be shared with the Billerica Cat Care Coalition. The exhibition, which will celebrate cats in general, will also give the public and area youth an opportunity to learn about cats as they photograph and draw them during a feline "meet and greet" at the gallery.
