The Lowell Plan - UMass Lowell Downtown Initiative

August 25, 2009

Dear GLCC member:

The University of Massachusetts Lowell and The Lowell Plan, Inc. welcome your participation in The Lowell Plan - UMass Lowell Downtown Initiative: The Inn & Conference Center (ICC) and Beyond.

As the University begins operating the ICC, we want to assess its economic and social impact in Lowell. This will help us to maximize opportunities for a high quality-of-life experience for everyone living in, working in, or visiting the area, including the ICC student-residents and entire campus community.

The GLCC supported the University’s outreach efforts during the planning phase of the ICC project and will continue to be involved with implementation of the Downtown Initiative as a link to downtown businesses and part of the feedback loop on campus-downtown relations.

We want to hear your thoughts and ideas about the ICC and learn how your business is being impacted by student life downtown.  To do this we would like to have a series of short conversations with you between late August and December of this year. The interviews will be conducted by a UMass Lowell graduate student under supervision of a faculty member. All discussions will remain confidential, however, the quantitative and qualitative data will be used in a final report that will be made public. No individuals or business information will be identified by name in the report.

If you are interested in speaking with us, please contact Paul Marion, UMass Lowell’s executive director of Community and Cultural Affairs, at 978-934-3107 or paul_marion@uml.edu, and a member of the Downtown Initiative team will set up a convenient time for a visit.  We will come to you!

Sincerely,

Jim Cook, Executive Director, The Lowell Plan, Inc.

Jacqueline Moloney, Executive Vice Chancellor, UMass Lowell

A quilt made out of ties.

The New England Quilt Museum is pleased to announce their first exhibition of the Fall season, MASTER PIECES: Haberdashery Textiles in Antique Quilts. Featuring quilts made from menswear, this remarkable exhibition brings together over 40 intriguing graphic works made from simple utilitarian fabrics long overlooked in the study of antique quilts. The guest curator for the exhibit is noted antiques dealer/expert and author Laura Fisher of Fisher Heritage in New York City. These quilts are compelling and often whimsical. Visually stunning and strikingly modern, these antique textiles make distinct graphic statements out of the most everyday materials.

Laura Fisher will be speaking about the exhibition's content at the opening reception on Sept. 26. Historic textiles expert Pam Weeks will deliver a lecture about textile production in New England mills on Oct. 17.

The Paper Girl Project

The Paper Girl Northampton Project is a locally based, self-funded, nonprofit project. The objective is to hold an open call for donated, original works of art on paper which are to be displayed in local shops and restaurants for a period of two weeks in this coming September. At the culmination of the exhibit the works will be rolled into brown paper and distributed at random by a team of cyclist to persons on the streets of Northampton, MA. The Paper Girl Project is rapidly gaining momentum and is taking place in other major cities and on an international level. As a result, the project will be simultaneously tying itself into an international arts community movement while soliciting an unsuspecting bond within the immediate Northampton community.

The open call for The Paper Girl Northampton Project requests original works of art on paper. Works are not to exceed 30 x 30. Participating artists will make donations with the understanding that their work will not be returned to them.

Donations can be made in person at 103 State St, Northampton MA. There will be a drop box in the front hall of the building. They can also be mailed to Katherine Romansky at 103 State Street, Apt 4, Northampton MA, 01060.

Please be sure that all your pieces are labeled with your name, title, medium and any contact info you may wish to include, should you be interested in the recipient being able to contact you.
