GLWIB Connecting Activities Workshop Series | The Greater Lowell WIB Connecting Activities program, in partnership with the Lowell High School Latino Connections program, held a workshop at Middlesex Community College on January 25, 2012. The workshop featured three guest speakers, Joseph Lopez and Michael Trejo, college students from Harvard, and Peter Martin, General Manager of Walgreens in Lowell.
Joseph and Michael shared their inspiring stories of challenging upbringings in urban environments. Both of Latino ethnicity, Michael, from Texas and Joseph from California (via El Salvador) overcame odds and worked hard to achieve their goals. Michael is majoring in Finance, and Joseph is enrolled in Medical and Business School at Harvard University. The message of both their presentations: "Never give up, never forget where you come from, but don't let it hold you back". Peter Martin, Walgreens General Manager, gave an inspiring presentation as well. He advised the youth, that regardless of level of experience, if you remain persistent, dress nicely, and act politely, you will show managers that you are prepared to work. Angelica Beatu and Daniela Marquez (right) came away with a lot of inspiration and motivation. "They captured our attention and inspired us because we come from similar backgrounds" Angelica said of Michael and Joseph. Daniela learned a lot too. "From Peter, I really learned the perspective of the manager and what it takes for someone my age to get a job. From Michael and Joseph, I learned that we really have no reason to not study, not to be somebody".
The GLWIB Connecting Activities program will be conducting workshops similar to this throughout the year; stay tuned for announcements. |
