Lowell Beer Works: 203 Cabot St.:  "Pumpkinfest  Returns!" Come celebrate the arrival of this famous autumn seasonal brew along with Oktoberfest or Beatific Brown (a medium brown, distinctly hoppy ale brewed in honor of Lowell's Annual Jack Kerouac festival) by raising a pint. Barnes and Noble, 151 Merrimack Street: AUTHOR SIGNING and READING, Thursday, September 23 from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM.  Teaching From the Middle of the Room:  Inviting Students to Learn, by Frank Thoms, invites his readers- -teachers, administrators, parents, and interested citizens - -to reexamine and reform the traditional culture of classroom teaching. Beautifully designed in an appealing layout, the book offers profound thoughts in bite-sized pieces. Thoms's bookstore readings actively engage audiences, as he uses his exemplary teaching skills to create dialogue and communicate his book's unique message. The Pollard Library:   It's a Hardbop Life: A Jazz Play.  Broadway trombonist and America's Hot Musician judge Gregory Charles Royal is touring a nationwide program to hold an open discussion on the lack of instrumental musicians in the fore of youth music culture. The Disposable Film Festival "Best of the Fest" comes to Lowell!  Tuesday, October 19 at 7:00 PM:  Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center, 246 Market Street: Save the date for a great film event! Voted one of the "coolest film festivals" by Movie Maker Magazine, The Disposable Film Festival has traveled to cities around the world showcasing hundreds of shorts filmed on disposable media. The Lowell Film Collaborative is honored to partner with The DFF to host a special Lowell screening of their 2010 "Best of the Fest"competition shorts as part of the Festival's fall East Coast tour! Hamilton Canal District Pedestrian Access Restriction:  Starting Monday, September 20th pedestrian access through the Hamilton Canal District (HCD) site will no longer be available.  Access will be restricted through the spring of 2011, when the Hamilton Canal and Trestle Bridge walkway project is anticipated to be open connecting the Merrimack Canal walkway with Jackson Street.  Trinity, the Master Developer for the HCD, will be completing on site roadway construction in the location of the current pedestrian walkway, thereby rendering pedestrian access through the site unsafe.  Pedestrians should seek alternate routes around the HCD and are encouraged to utilize safe routes on existing sidewalks.
 
The City of Lowell is proud to announce an exciting opportunity for businesses, building owners, and residents of Lowell's Downtown Historic District (DLHD) to seek up to $500,000 in combined grant and loan incentives for energy efficiency improvements to their buildings.  The DLHD encompasses much of Lowell's downtown area including the commercial district, millyards, and canal system. The Lowell Historic Board's interactive website makes it easy to check a specific address to see if it is within the Historic District (http://www.lowellma.gov/depts/historic-board/review-districts-permitting/Street%20Listings%20-%20All%20Districts.pdf/view.  Details for the complete Grant Application will be announced in late September
