Greetings! The 2011 Summer Jobs Program concluded on August 24, 2011. This year 271 young adults ages 14-24 from Lowell, were able to receive invaluable summer work experience. The GLWIB and CCL would like to thank the 58 work-sites who participated in the program this summer.
The GLWIB recently held its Quarterly meeting at the Radisson Hotel & Suites in Chelmsford. The guest speaker at the event was Dan DeMaioNewton (right), Director of Strategy and Business Development at Monster Worldwide. Long time Board Member Dan O'Connor, Director of the Lowell Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) was recognized for his 38 years of public service at the meeting. Dan is retiring after spending his entire career at the DTA. Dan was a very active member of the Board and Youth Council. He has served the region compassionately and effectively. In other news, GLWIB Chair Kevin Coughlin has named Shawn Barry, of the UMass Lowell Center for Family, Work, and Community, as the new Chair of the Youth Council, effective immediately. Shawn is a long time member of the Youth Council and serves on the project review committee for youth proposals. He is the Associate Manager of Gear UP! and Project Manager of the Science of Small Things. We are pleased Shawn has accepted this position and look forward to working with him on youth issues. |

Understanding the American Jobs Act Legislation | On September 8, 2011, President Obama submitted the American Jobs Act of 2011 legislation to Congress for approval. Job Training for Energy Efficiency Occupations | As part of an ongoing initiative, the GLWIB has grants available to train unemployed and underemployed individuals for occupations in energy efficiency. Options include training and certification in BPI, NATE, NABCEP,Construction Supervisor, Lead-Safe and RESNET/HERS.
The GLWIB and Career Center of Lowell have been working with both unemployed customers and employers weekly on training and job placement. There is still funding for training available! TAA/CC Career Training Grant | The Massachusetts Community College Consortium which includes Middlesex and Northern Essex Community Colleges, has been awarded a Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training TAA/CCCT) Grant from the Department of Labor in the amount of $20 million.
Middlesex Community College will receive nearly $1 million, to establish formal working relationships within and between the college, and the local workforce development system, and elementary and secondary education system. The project is designed to build statewide capacity to deliver high-quality education and training programs that lead to credentials and employment in six key industry sectors: - Life Sciences and Biotechnology;
- Information Technology;
- Health Care;
- Clean Energy;
- Advanced Manufacturing;
- Financial Services
