The Massachusetts EOLWD reported that the MA Unemployment rate has dropped to 8.1%, the lowest since April 2009. Since August, the rate has dropped seven tenths of a percentage point and remains below the 9.6 percent national rate. For the latest news on the unemployment rates in MA, click here.
In other news, GLWIB Director Barbara O'Neil, has been invited to present an overview on the Merrimack Valley Regional Innovation Grant and the GLWIB's achievement of High Performing Board certification to the South Carolina Workforce Development Partnership Symposium in February 2011.

CCL Guest Speaker Series
The Career Center of Lowell is providing an ongoing Guest Speaker Series to job seekers in the area. On Friday December 3rd at 2:00pm, Dan Cote from nSight Inc, will be the guest speaker. Dan, VP for Marketing and Strategy, will discuss how to take advantage of the newly formed partnership with the Career Center, to provide free skills training to local residents.
nSight. Inc. is a content development and communications services firm that specializes in learning and information products and the people who create and produce them. The Burlington company has made a commitment to allocate 25% of all class seats to people collecting unemployment benefits from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
During a recent trip to Lowell, Assistant US Secretary of Employment andTraining, Jane Oates (right) paid a visit to the United Teen Equality Center for a tour of their facility and met with several youth participating in workforce programs. While on her visit, she observed the youth at work at UTEC's various programs including culinary arts, maintenance, and mulitimedia. UTEC is a partner to the GLWIB and Career Center of Lowell providing services for Out-of-School Youth, ages 16-21, with GED preparation, workplace preparation, occupational skills training options, peer leadership training, guidance and career counseling and job placement assistance.
